leaving the order
Order members are of course free to leave the order at any time, and a number have done so for a variety of reasons. It is an important decision, both for themselves and for their friends in the order.
The decision to no longer form part of the order is normally taken after considerable thought and discussion with other order members, kalyanamitras and preceptors.
resignation
Once due process has been followed to accept an Order member's resignation by his or her public preceptor notice should be sent by the public preceptor to Shabda, perhaps along with a letter of resignation. This way other order members know of the decision. Announcement in Shabda will be the occasion for the removal of the person from the Order list.
expulsion
Occasionally the public preceptors may need to consider expelling someone from the order if their behaviour goes strongly against the ideals embodied in the Three Jewels, the ten precepts taken at the time of ordination or the principles of the order. This decision will only be taken after consultation with other members of the order and considerable effort to discuss it all with the order member in question.
